WRESTLING as an AEROBIC WORKOUT
By Ric 'The Equalizer' Drasin

Ok, you are going to laugh and say, WHAT? Wrestling? What the heck is he talking about? Well, think about it. You've seen WWF at least once in your lifetime. You've seen wrestlers run from rope to rope and summersault, flip over, run again in and out of the ring, etc. Well, that takes a lot of stamina and you have to be in shape. Not to mention the cardio involved.

Most people sit at home watching this on their easy chair and think that they can do that. No problem, it's just running around. Well, it's a lot more than that as you have to think as you do it. It takes a lot of timing, discipline, thought and training. But it can get you in the best shape of your life and you can have fun doing it.

I have a lot of people come to me and tell me that they would like to train to become a wrestler. Well, I ask them if they are in shape and if they can handle the demand put on the body. I had one guy come to me and told me that he can take punishment as well as dish it out and is an expert at martial arts, etc etc.

Those are the worst kind, as they have no idea what they are in for. I had him come over and get in the ring. First off, I had him do forward ¾ rolls and summersaults. He couldn't do them. One time through he was 'blown up' as we call it in the business, but means, 'sucking wind'. Just on that alone he was out of shape.

I worked with him until he got it down somewhat but was in terrible shape. Then I had him do them backwards. Again, it was hard for him. He had every excuse in the book for why he couldn't do it. Finally he came through and was able to execute the moves. Next, I taught him to fall backwards. This means throwing your feet in the air and landing on your back not unlike a judo fall. Now, my ring is padded and has a spring to it so it's pretty unlikely that you will get hurt.

He kept hitting his head even though I told him to tuck his chin until he had a massive headache. This went on for several sessions until he never showed up again.

ON the flip side. I have people who have been with me for over a year and have mastered all of this and are in fantastic shape now. They can go 15 min in the ring and not even breath hard. You have to develop timing so that you hit the mat solid and all body parts hit together. When you run ropes you run in one direction as someone else is running the other way so that you crisscross and not hit each other. You learn to take holds and leave them loose as not to hurt each other. Your mind has to let your body relax as it performs in action. So, as you see, there are a lot of things going on with you.

Running the ropes on a padded ring with a spring is great for your leg development; the cardio you get is unbelievable. The coordination of working wrestling holds, flips, bumps and moves develops your timing and agility to the max and burns a tremendous amount of body fat.

Now, also people think that wrestling is fake. Well its entertainment, but each and every one of those holds that we teach are real. If you would apply pressure, you would really hurt someone. But we are working out and practicing so we don't want to do that. But again on the flip side, if you were attacked on the street, you could use those for self-defense and also since you had been training, your senses, timing, agility, knowledge and cardio are so up that you would dominate the situation.

I have two girls that started training about 2 months ago. They had no idea of what wrestling was about. After the 2nd lesson, they started to get in better shape even though they were bodybuilders from Gold's Venice. There wind was improving, along with all the other skills that I had mentioned above. They love coming here so much that they are always early and stay late and have NEVER missed a workout. Yesterday I taped a 7 min match where they went full steam and it looked fantastic and they weren't even out of breath. Proof to me that this is one unique way to get your body where you want.

You don't have to have aspirations to become a wrestler to take a class. Like I said, it's an aerobic workout with side benefits.

I plan to open up classes for groups and have them run these drills. It can only make them better and they will have a blast doing it. Who knows, we may find a future champion in the crowd. Then I can put them on one of my shows. Can you imagine one of the housewives in the main event?

What an interesting conversation you can have when you go out to dinner with friends and they ask where you work out. Hmm., I go to a Pro Wrestling School.

Watch their mouths drop and the food hit the plate. Then you can arm wrestle them for the check.
